In order to further lessen Solana’s low environmental impact, the Solana Foundation has made the network carbon neutral for 2021. Using Watershed Climate, the Foundation is funding refrigerant destruction, one of the most effective ways to maximize carbon offsets according to Green America. The process involves incentivizing the proper disposal of CFCs, which permanently eliminates them.

Even with the Solana’s lighter impact, its energy needs will grow as the network grows. The Solana Foundation is committed to keeping the network carbon neutral in 2022 and in the future and encourages all validators to take a look at their own local emissions data and mitigation strategies. In addition, the engineers at Solana Labs will continue to make Solana more performant — and therefore, more energy efficient.
